Portrait Demonstration with David Wells
14 June 2025

At our June meeting, members of the Gold Coast Pastel Society were treated to an inspiring portrait demonstration by artist David Wells, celebrated for his sensitive realism and thoughtful technique.
David began by sharing his time-saving method of transferring a photographic outline onto pastel paper, using granite-coloured transfer paper. For this demonstration, he chose a pale blue paper to create a head-and-shoulders portrait, focusing on capturing the warmth of skin tones in the light.
He started by blocking in these tones with soft pastels, applying colour loosely in tonal areas. He then, ever so softly, blended them with his fingertip. Once the foundational layer was in place, David added definition and detail using pastel pencils, gently scribbling to build texture and form.
The hair was built up in fine lines and layers, combining midtones, deep shadows, and highlights to create a sense of depth and realistic shine.
Throughout the session, David interwove his technical process with personal art stories, generously sharing insights and tips. The demonstration was both informative and encouraging—particularly for those exploring portraiture.
