Accessories to use when painting with pastels

Barrier - Moisturising Cream

Zest-it Artist Hand Lotion can be used as a barrier cream prior to work or as a moisturising  cream after hand washing. When used as a barrier cream, it will protect against wet and dry  contaminants such as oil paint and oil based products, solvents, resins, varnish, acrylic, and wax,  drawing ink, graphite, pastel and charcoal. (Arthouse Northside)

Fixatives

Are used for Charcoal and Pastels and can be either workable or final. They can have a darkening  effect on the colours which may or may not be helpful. There is controversy regarding the use of fixative so personal experimentation is recommended.  Apply it lightly. IT can be used often while a painting is in progress however give finished work a  very light spray only if at all.  Fixatives available include: • Spectra fix (spray fixative); • Micador (matt and workable); • NAM (matt and workable); • Schmincke (fixative for pastels). (Betty Sutton)

Kneadable Erasers

Can be molded to any shape making it easier to remove unwanted pastel from either large areas or  finer detailed areas. They are cleaned simply by kneading the rubber until all traces of the pastel  has been removed. Kneadable erasers include: • Faber Castell Kneadable eraser • Faber Castell PVC Free eraser • Prismacolor Kneeded rubber eraser. (PSA)

Tortillons and Shapers

Are used for direct blending when mixing pastels.  Tortillons or grey paper stumps or bending stumps are lightly spiral wound soft grey paper used  for smoothing and blending. Shapers have a silicon tip and are available in various shapes, levels of firmness and sizes. They  can blend, smudge and define pastel work and clean up easily with mild soap or brush cleaner.  (Betty Suttons)

Varnish

Protects the work and spray varnish is best for any mixed media as it leaves an even sheen on the  surface.
