'The Power of Complelmentary Colours'

11 April 2026

At the Gold Coast’s April session, Petronella van Leusden demonstrated the use of complementary colours to add power and depth to a composition. She led participants to really see how complementary colours can be used not only for contrast, but also for subtle modulation, atmosphere, and unity.

The demo’ centred on a carefully arranged still life, approached through a high-key tonal framework. Rather than relying on strong contrasts, the composition explored subtle shifts within the lightest three tonal values, creating a sense of quiet luminosity and cohesion.

An underpainting in yellow and purple established the foundation, particularly within the shadow areas of the cloth. This complementary colour pairing immediately introduced vibration and depth, allowing subsequent layers to interact optically rather than sit heavily on top.

Rectangular forms were selected for the still life, offering a variety of planes on which colour relationships could unfold. The surrounding palette consisted of yellow-oranges and soft pinks set deliberately against objects rendered in blues and greens. This interplay of complements created both harmony and visual tension, drawing the viewer’s eye without overwhelming the composition.

Background colours were neutralised with subtlety, again using complementary mixtures, to prevent dominance and maintain richness. The use of Art Spectrum Colourfix paper played a significant role; its inherent texture was left partially exposed, allowing a natural sparkle to emerge and contribute to the overall vibrancy of the work.

Within the objects themselves, shadows were developed through the addition of complementary hues—introducing the “missing” colour rather than defaulting to darker values. This approach resulted in shadows that felt integrated, luminous, and alive.

Participants gained valuable insight into building colour relationships that remain fresh and responsive, avoiding overworked surfaces while enhancing depth and interest.

A wonderfully insightful and instructive session – thank you once again Petronella for your wisdom and generosity.
