Working with pens - an easy way to create stunning sketch book drawings that you will be proud to show to your communities.

Suitable for all experience levels

If you feel anxious about making tiny precise marks to create a pen drawing, then this workshop is for you as you will learn a relaxed approach to pen work, based on landscape images

This workshop will help switch on your responsive self to render some surprising outcomes. In no time you will be eager to fill up your sketch books with quaint and desirable images.

Let us together address the need to simplify, the need to reflect, the need to breathe again, the need to reconnect with nature with like-minded people. Let us get lost in a world of positivity and wholesome activity.

With just sketch paper, a few pens, and garden images we can engage in “lap art.”  Sweep your mind across a garden setting, take a journey along meandering pathways, and be delighted with the various forms of foliage and colourful blooms. Find yourself connecting once again to one of nature's most delightful subjects. Palpate the penetrating rejuvenation offered by a garden.

Be surprised at the intense moments of distraction whilst rhythmically creating responsive pen marks that will record your visual footprints as you move across the forms.

Collectively we address:

  • A plan of attack – how to engage an audience

  • Simplifying the process

  • Pen and paper types

  • Making marks – using your own personal marks for ease and effectiveness, finding marks and shapes for flowers

  • Building an image

  • Troubleshooting on the run – dealing with mishaps- plans B, C, and D etc

  • Future potential

Projects include:

  • Pen play

  • Gestural rendition – an organic growing of a garden on paper

  • A simple gardenscape with an anchor element

  • A more complex gardenscape with a pathway, flowering blooms, trees, perhaps a water feature

  • A gardenscape combining the use of all pen methods

Louise Corke

Drawing and painting have become Louise’s language for conveying her love and appreciation of the natural world. Her visual voice echoes her heartfelt responses to what she sees. She finds herself at her best when present with trees and in a garden where the stimulation of plants incites her imagination to roam with abandonment. Aiming to capture that emotional reaction has become her passion, with particular attention on how all things connect.

Her work is a response to what she has directly experienced and comes under the umbrella of responsive realism, though small aspects of abstraction may be found within. Her art is not limited to one medium, as she has dabbled in most for extended periods of time. Soft pastels have become her mainstay, though the lure of other art media continues to knock at her heart.

Seriously turning to art in the early 1990s, Louise has not wavered in excitement for her craft since. Studying under a world-class artist for seven years established a solid foundation for future studies internationally. Achievements and professional recognition have ensued, evidencing success in her desire to ascribe to excellence as opposed to perfection.

She has become a sought-after tutor, tour leader, and encourager. She has been able to influence many through her quiet, yet deep understanding of human nature, seeking always to adapt her teaching approach to meet the needs of her charges.

Louise’s main vision is to share her love for the natural world and to share this experience through empowering others to also engage in this wonderful way of connecting to something powerful, wholesome, and good, whether this be through appreciation of the art or through directly learning some skills for self-expression.
