One Day Workshop Pastel Landscape and Texture on Paper with Tricia Reust

Tricia Reust presents a one-day pastel landscape and texture workshop on paper, exploring underpainting techniques, textured surfaces and both traditional and contemporary pastel approaches. Tuesday May 5, 2026 at Balang Mia Community Hub, WA

Time & Location

05 May 2026, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm

Balang Mia Community Hub, 61 Brockman St, Pemberton WA 6260, Australia

Details:

Workshop Description:

This is a workshop to expand the use of pastel. We will look at brief theory of landscape; how pastel can be used as a wet medium for an underpainting; and texturing paper for pastel. Participants can choose to work in a traditional manner or a more

contemporary approach.

Tricia’s teaching process includes theory, handouts and demonstrations.

Material Requirements:

If you require materials for the workshop, Tricia will be organising a group order. Please contact Tricia at triciareust@gmail.com before 10 April to be included.

  • Visual diary and pencil for taking notes and sketching out compositions.

  • Two Boards each with half sheet Art Spectrum Colour Fix paper masking-taped to it

  • (your choice of colour though not a dark tone). I will be using white. Blue Haze and Soft

  • Umber are also good colours. We will create one work with a wet pastel underpainting and

  • one work with a textured foreground. Some scraps of firm pastel paper for two exercises

  • on using pastel wet.

  • Optional – if you wish you can do a full-page landscape – the back board must be large

  • enough to fit the paper.

  • Your regular soft pastels (I use Art Spectrum); kneadable eraser; torchon; and some pastel

  • pencils for detail. A basic palette includes a hot and cool each of red, blue and yellow; an

  • orange, green and purple; white; yellow ochre; burnt sienna and burnt umber; and any

  • colours appropriate to the landscape you choose to depict. (Please note – Rembrandt

  • pastels do not mix with water very well. The newer Art Spectrum soft big block pastels are

  • great for final layers of colour). Pencil sharpener or Stanley knife.

  • Art Spectrum clear pastel primer is essential. We only use a little so people can share.

  • White gesso and a palette knife.

  • Paper towels; towel or other protection for work surface.

  • Container for water. Paint brush for moving wet pastel around – a flat Taklon one at least half

  • an inch wide is suggested.

  • Reference material – your chosen landscapes. One of these must have a foreground,

  • middle ground and background. I will have some images to share, and people can feel free

  • to follow what I use..

  • Optional – glassine paper for protection of works when transporting home, and a folder.
