Tutor Information

Paul McCarthy, born in Sydney in 1966, is a prominent Australian painter celebrated for his masterful integration of colour and natural landscapes. With an artistic career spanning three decades, McCarthy has cultivated a unique visual language by skillfully blending the vibrant energy of Fauvism, the delicate touch of Impressionism, and the innovative spirit of contemporary abstract art.
His artwork is distinguished by its rich palette and deep understanding of light and shadow, often interpreted as an homage to the infinite possibilities found in the Australian natural environment. On the canvas, every brushstroke acts as a profound dialogue with the surrounding world, expressed through both bold colour pairings and subtle, soft gradations. McCarthy's commitment to the plein-air allows him to not only document Australia's diverse settings - from its coasts and inland territories to its remote heartland - but also to infuse each piece with a new, dramatic intensity of light and colour. His works are strongly expressive and vibrant conveying the rugged beauty and dynamism of the natural landscape.
Beyond his studio practice, McCarthy is a dedicated community artist. His engagements include curatorial work for the Sydney Children's Hospital, community artist at Warringah Council, workshops coordinator at the Sydney Cancer Centre Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. McCarthy's teaching philosophy is highly regarded. He fosters the individual artistic growth of his students while prioritising the development of core skills in design, composition, and colour.
