Penelope Gilbert-Ng: "Focusing on skin colours/tones in portraiture"
This soft pastel workshop focuses on creating vibrant portraits of different skin tones, colour mixing, and measuring for likeness. It runs over two days on 19th - 20th September 2026 in Brisbane, QLD.
Time & Location
19 Sept 2026, 9:00 am – 20 Sept 2026, 4:00 pm
Queen Alexandra Home (Brisbane), 347 Old Cleveland Rd, Coorparoo QLD 4151, Australia
Details:
In this 2-day workshop, we will explore the nuances of three skin tones. By working on a smaller scale, we can ensure each of these portrait studies is completed within the workshop.
Technique
We will experiment with different surfaces and application methods to understand how they influence the final piece:
We will work on both a soft umber surface and a traditional white surface.
On the white paper, we will explore two distinct approaches—one using a watercolour toning as a base, and the other involving wetting the pastel itself to create a textured underpainting before layering dry pastel on top.
Learning Outcomes
The primary goal is to use soft pastels to create vibrant, lifelike portraits. To achieve this, our study will focus on:
Structure & Light: Structure of the head will be considered with using shadow shapes against the light on the face.
Accuracy: A strong emphasis will be placed on measuring techniques to ensure a true and convincing likeness.
Composition: We will look at how to effectively add backgrounds to create "air" and depth around the head and shoulders, giving the portrait a sense of space.
Edge Control: Exploring the intentional use of sharp, soft, and "lost" edges to add expressiveness and focus to a portrait.
Vibrant Palettes: Selecting and layering colours that bring life and warmth to the skin while maintaining realistic tonal values.
