Duration: 1 day workshop

Colour is expressive - but it is tonal value that makes a painting convincing. In this hands-on pastel workshop, we explore the often-tricky relationship between value and colour, and how to choose pastel colours that remain true to the underlying light and dark structure of your subject.

This workshop is designed to move from drawing in pencil or charcoal to the next step: translating tonal drawing into confident colour painting. A strong understanding of tonal value underpins resemblance, supports composition, and gives clarity and depth to your work.

In this workshop you will

  • Learn to see light and dark clearly, even when colours change

  • Simplify your reference into four basic tonal values

  • Check and strengthen contrast so your subject reads clearly

  • Use tonal value to create focus and depth

  • Feel more confident choosing pastel colours that match tone, not just colour

  • Avoid muddiness and overworking in your paintings
