Tricia Taylor: Forest Light

This workshop focuses on pastel and watercolour: mark making, colour theory, composition to achieve the illusion of detailed forests without the work of painting every leaf. Workshop runs over two days on Friday, 4 June - Saturday, 5 June, 2026 in Newcastle, NSW.

Time & Location

05 June 2026, 8:30 am AEST – 06 June 2026, 4:30 pm AEST

Uniting Church Hall, 29 Highfield St, Mayfield, Newcastle NSW 2304, Australia

Details:

Duration: 2 day workshop

In my recent travels I have had the opportunity to go on a lot of nature walks through forest paths. Trying to capture the feeling of light through the trees and the tranquillity of the experience is one of my favourite things to paint.

But the complexity of forests can be daunting because of all the detail.  In this workshop we will play with underpainting techniques to make the process simpler. The goal will be to achieve the illusion of detailed forests without the work of painting every leaf. Be prepared to play and explore with colour and light and nature.

We will also be gaining understanding of the colour green and how temperature can play a part in our compositions. Lots to explore and play with the combination of watercolour and pastel.

Note: You do not need experience with watercolour to enjoy this workshop.

Outcomes

With this workshop being a play with watercolour and pastel, the students will come away with new skills in simplifying complex scenes by using underpainting techniques. Mark making, colour theory, composition and more will be on our learning list for the two days. Rather than coming away with one major artwork, the workshop will focus on multiple smaller works to explore application techniques.
