Details:

Workshop Description:

We will be working on two gessoed canvases, one smaller (about 10 by 12 inches preferable no larger) and one at least 24 x 30 inches, or preferably larger. The process will be to briefly cover basic design principles; collage and texture the canvas surfaces on the first day, and complete the works with paint and/or dry drawing media. Drawings can be incorporated in the collage and/or drawn directly on to the canvas. It is optional if you wish to add already existing drawings in with your collage, and if you wish to draw on your canvas (I will be doing both).

We will explore completing one smaller work with a minimal approach, and the other larger work incorporating all the techniques to be covered, including glazing, printing, stencilling and stamping. Because we cover so many techniques, it is good to have one theme to harmonise the work and to be a repetitive motif eg leaves; birds; chooks; fruit; or, if you prefer an abstract approach, geometric shapes such as circles; rectangles; triangles etc.

Material Requirements:

If you require materials for the workshop, Tricia will be organising a group order. Please contact Tricia at triciareust@gmail.com before 10 April to be included.

Please do not be overwhelmed by this list – you have many choices on what to bring along, and you are welcome to bring the barest minimum of supplies. Optionals are clearly marked.

  • Surface: two gessoed canvases (the canvases usually come already gessoed if purchased from art stores), one no larger than 11 by 14 inches, and one at least 24 by 30 inches, preferably larger than this. This is a good opportunity to reuse old canvases – just place a layer of white gesso over the old painting before the workshop.

  • Visual diary and pencil/s for taking notes, for sketching compositions, and for making a paper stencil; a waterfast black ink pen (for drawing on white tissue paper). I use Pigma Micron.

  • Acrylic paint (not Jo Sonja). Some good colour choices include Red Gold, Permanent Alizarin, Phthalo Turquoise, Quinacridone Magenta, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Dioxazine Purple, Paynes Grey, Transparent Yellow and any of the Siennas and Umbers. White gesso. Optional – white and black Atelier Free Flow for final details.

  • A couple of containers for water (EG: old ice-cream tubs). Brayer – optional

  • Brushes: your regular acrylic brushes and at least one flat quarter inch Taklon and a Taklon liner brush; cheap wide bristle brush for medium application. sponge; sponge roller is essential – we use this to roll out our glazes and for certain effects on the canvas.

  • Palette – must be large and flat, not watercolour palette with recesses; palette knife; combs and/or other tools with which to create textured lines.

  • Water misting spray bottle; masking tape.

  • Paper towels essential and rags (I use an old towel to cover my surface); cling wrap.

  • Mediums : Essential Binder Medium; Clear Painting Medium or Middle Painting Medium ; impasto gel (also called heavy gel gloss) And/Or Texture medium (also called modelling compound); Spray varnish (I use Satin);

  • Matt Spray - used to protect your drawings etc for collaging. Art Spectrum clear Pastel primer

  • Collage materials : (I will have some to share.) Any thick and thin papers and fabrics:- Tissue paper (at least one sheet of white essential), and any other interesting papers that you wish to utilize, including (you do not have to bring everything) printed napkins; paper doilies; ticket stubs; photocopied music and maps etc; snake skin; thin paper bark; corrugated cardboard; thin and flat scraps of metal or jewellery etc . Bring along anything you wish to incorporate as part of the collaged surface, and we’ll see if it can be used.

  • Drawings (graphite and/or charcoal; pastel; small watercolour etc) from home to use in collage.

  • Optional – (I will have some to share). Texture materials: plastic doilies; leaves; anything with a heavily patterned surface etc.

  • Optional - Stamps and stencils, (I will have some to share), either manufactured or ones you have made yourself, including bubblewrap; leaves; sliced louffa; patterned objects etc. NOTE – we make a paper stencil; we can stamp and print just one object eg a leaf so anything else is optional.

  • Optional - Reference photos – landscape; birds; flowers; figures etc – any motifs you want to explore.

  • Drawings (graphite and/or charcoal) from home to use in collage.

  • Optional extras: charcoal stick and charcoal pencil; white pastel stick and white pastel pencil if you wish to draw on the canvas.
