Details:

Workshop Description:

Choosing to work in a TRADITIONAL or CONTEMPORARY style, we will create a landscape OR draw a pastel motif over a collage and texture on canvas, using acrylic paint and pastel (and charcoal optional). We will briefly cover landscape theory, create the collage, apply texture, place an initial acrylic paint wash, and then complete the work with pastel and/or charcoal.

Materials Requirements

If you require materials for the workshop, Tricia will be organising a group order. Please contact Tricia at triciareust@gmail.com before 10 April to be included.

  • large gessoed canvas, preferably at least 24 by 30 inches but hopefully larger. This is a good opportunity to reuse an older canvas – if you use an old canvas, cover it in white gesso before the workshop.

  • Visual diary and pencil/s for taking notes, and for sketching compositions.

  • Paper towels essential and rags (I use an old towel to cover my surface); cling wrap

  • Acrylic paint (not Jo Sonja)for the washes. Some good colour choices include Red Gold, Permanent Alizarin, Phthalo Turquoise, Quinacridone Magenta, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Dioxazine Purple, Paynes Grey. NB if you don’t have acrylics, please feel free to use mine for your washes

  • White gesso.

  • Pastels – your regular soft pastels – making sure you have some good landscape colours. Pastel pencils are optional. Compressed charcoal is optional.

  • Containers - You will need containers large enough to hold your mixed paint washes if you are not using mine (round take away food containers with lids work well). A couple of containers for water (EG: old ice-cream tubs).

  • Brushes: goat hair hake brushes for the washes (you can borrow mine if you are using my washes); cheap wide bristle brush @ 1 inch or larger for medium application – essential for the collage.

  • Water misting spray bottle; masking tape; spray varnish (I use Micador satin); Matt Spray (optional – for use on collage elements with unstable surface such as drawings, so you only need this spray if you are using original drawings in your collage).

  • Mediums: Binder medium; impasto gel and/or modelling compound (texture mediums); Art Spectrum clear pastel primer. Combs or other texture-making tools – you may choose to only use a palette knife.

  • Collage materials: Any thin papers and fabrics:- Tissue paper , and any other interesting papers that you wish to utilize, including printed napkins; cheesecloth; paper doilies; ticket stubs; photocopied music and maps etc. Think about what collage elements would enhance the story of your landscape.

  • Reference landscape photos OR photos of birds, animals, flowers etc if choosing to draw a motif instead of creating a landscape.

  • Optional - Drawings (pastel, graphite and/or charcoal) which you have already completed and want to include as collage – if so, then the Matt Spray is essential as it protects the drawings for use in collage.
