About the Demo:

Guest presenter Lynn Howarth will be looking at shapes and how they create a dynamic and very important element of composition.


Our guest presenter will also be serving as the judge for the set subject competition. Drawing upon her extensive technical expertise, she will provide a professional critique of the entries, evaluating each piece on its composition, technical execution, and creative interpretation of the theme. This is a fantastic opportunity for members to receive expert feedback from a world-class pastelist and gain insight into the standards expected at the highest levels of international competition.

Time: 5.30 for a 6.00 PM start to 8:30 PM (Brisbane AEST Time)

Location: Online via Zoom

Cost: – Free for PSA members– $10 for non-members

Artist's Bio:

An award-winning Scottish artist, Lynn Howarth specialises in the medium of soft pastel to create evocative figurative pieces, portraits, interiors, and landscapes. A graduate of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen (1979), she enjoyed a successful career in Graphic Design before returning to their fine art roots in 2012.


Since rededicating her to drawing and painting, she has become a prominent educator in the field. She previously taught life drawing and foundational art classes at Strathclyde University until 2023 and currently offers specialised soft pastel instruction from their Glasgow studio. Her expertise is frequently sought after for live demonstrations and workshops, both internationally and via Zoom.

Lynn's technical mastery has earned her prestigious recognition within the global pastel community:

  • Master Circle Status: International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS)

  • Signature Member: Pastel Guild of Europe

  • Artist Member: Paisley Art Institute

  • Artist Member: Glasgow Society of Women Artists


With a reach that extends far beyond Scotland, her work is held in private and public collections across the USA, Australia, Europe, and the UK.

  • Eligibility: PSA members only

  • Entry Fee: $5

  • Entry Limit: 2 paintings (max file size: 2MB each)

  • Judging Process: Judged independently by the monthly Zoom demonstrator

Prizes:

  • General Member Winner: $200

  • AP/MP Winner: $100

 

Themes: 'Shapes - Crazy but Captivating' (open to interpretation by the entrant)

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Winners of any PSA Set Subject Competition become ineligible to enter the annual Alexandra Awards (for members who’ve never won a first prize for a pastel painting in an art competition) , run in conjunction with the PSA Annual Awards Exhibition.
