Celebrating 40 Years (1986 - 2026)

'Power of Contrast'

10 March 2026

Our March Zoom participants produced some impressive works for judge, Lyn Mellady, to sort through and bless with her words and wisdom.

Lynda Robinson was the winner for the General Member category, with her painting ‘Shady Glade’. The judge considered this a “very well observed and beautifully done” work, noting the “beautiful flow of light” and the detailed “texture of the scrubbery”, with use of “aerial, lineal, textural perspective” and the “contrast of light and dark at play around the two chosen trees”. She reflected further that “you can see this artist is painting what she loves”. Ah, the serenity in this lovely ‘shady glade’.

Karen Christiansen won for the Master and Accomplished Pastellist Members category, for her work, ‘In The Sunshine’. According to the judge, “the first thing [she] saw…was that lovely smile”, and that the subject’s personality “just seems to ooze”. The key point is that the subject initially appeared most prominent to the eye, before details of the artist’s execution emerged. This is “a major success point” of the work, based on the strengths of “layered building…[and] balance of touches”, with the “little subtle bits” that pull it together. The overall effect was that “it’s a joy”, and the “eyes sparkle with mischief…beautiful”.
