'Playing With Red'

‘Playing With Red’ was the theme for our Zoom set subject competition in June and attracted some excellent examples of interpretation. General member, Jane Wray, won for her striking piece entitled ‘Blaze’, with the judge commenting on the “vertical movement…and strong contrasts…a stunning piece”. 

Karen Christiansen (MP/AP category) adopted a more subtle approach for her winning painting, ‘Summer Sparkle’, and drew the judge’s reaction, “isn’t she gorgeous”, noting the compositional strengths, and her use of colour and mark-making to capture the expression of her young subject. In both paintings, it’s the reds that immediately draw the viewer’s eye, despite the distinctly different style of each artist. Wonderful work!
