During a night filled with anecdotes and her accumulated artistic wisdom, Penelope Gilbert-Ng guided us through her techniques to know ‘what to look for and simplify in the landscape’.
Participants learned that the “kiss of light” adds to the magic of a painting, which Penny then demonstrated in the final touches of her painting, instantly bringing to life the central subjects. “A painting should have a little bit of mystery” is another of Penny’s aphorisms, which she inserts in elements of detail that can surprise the engaged viewer. Such were her insights, and there were many.
Penny worked quickly, adding blocks and layers of colour to achieve atmospheric effects, gently teasing out her painting. What emerged drew the viewer not just to a painting, but an experience with a sense of time, as well as space and story.
Thanks once again Penny, for an excellent demo’ filled with stories and moments of artistic insight.
