Louise Corke’s recent demonstration, Harnessing an Emotional Response, reminded us that an artwork gains true power when it carries emotion. It speaks to the heart of the viewer and becomes far more meaningful for the artist—transcending colour, shape, and line.
Louise began by emphasising the importance of preparing one’s workspace so that it supports and carries creative energy. She encouraged artists to actively unleash positive emotion, allowing it to flow into their work.
As she painted, Louise shared her own reflections—describing sensations such as meandering to the top of the hill and the exhilaration of reaching the summit. She spoke of how memories of weather and atmosphere inform her choices and guide the viewer’s journey through a painting.
Throughout the demonstration, Louise beautifully illustrated how emotional reflection can influence mark-making, colour selection, and the overall spirit of a piece—allowing that emotion to ultimately reside within the artwork itself.
