There are many different mediums to suit everyone’ style, check out www.chromaonline.com to see the full range of mediums and gels available.
The gloss medium is a traditional general purpose one that adds translucency and increases gloss. It can be mixed with the paint as a medium or used to seal a paint layer before over painting. Gloss can also be used on any type of canvas or paper which is prepared with gesso first. These mediums dry fast and are waterproof for standard acrylic techniques.
There are interactive mediums which maintain or enhance the re-wetting properties of interactive. The clear painting medium gives a transparent look when dry. The slow medium extends the wet-in-wet bending time and is used in conjunction with the fine water sprayer which is fantastic as it allows control of the drying speed of the painting.
There is also a binder medium and when retarder is added it slows down the drying time of acrylic paint which gives more time to push the paint around. The binder is also great with charcoal as it seals it in.
To make a ‘skin’ mix the Heavy gel with a few drops of paint added then a palette knife is used to spread it over baking paper and left to dry. It is then peeled off the paper and placed where required on the painting. This method could be used for waves, mountains etc.
